Acne and acne scars affect millions of teens and adults worldwide. Acne usually appears in adolescence when young people feel most insecure about themselves and their appearance. Left untreated, it continues into adulthood, leaving acne scars, dark blemishes, severe discoloration, and low self-esteem in its wake. It’s definitely easier to clear and control acne before there’s a need for acne scar treatment.
Acne & Scar Treatment
Professional acne and acne scar treatment, products, and several important lifestyle changes are often necessary to stop the inflammatory path of acne in its tracks and to slow down or prevent the formation of new acne lesions, dark blemishes, and scarring. Unfortunately, truly effective acne and acne scar treatment, especially for ethnic and black skin, is either hard to find or unavailable. Many people don’t seek help with their acne until it’s too late to prevent scarring. And, it’s likely that the methods they try are unsuccessful.
Types of Acne Scars
Acne scarring occurs as the superficial and dermis layers are damaged by prolonged inflammation and other factors in the progression of acne. Many ethnic acne scars (on black skin, olive skin, and darker skin tones) are flat and leave only dark hyperpigmented marks. Severe acne lesions can lead to severe acne scars down the road. Scars are made of fibrous tissue which can replace normal skin texture after moderate to severe acne. It’s the same protein (collagen) as the skin it replaces, but the composition is different, and with black skin and other ethnic skin, scarring will often heal much darker than the surrounding skin. Acne scars can also be raised (hypertrophic scars), grow outside of the original injury site (keloid scars), or form a sunken recess with a pitted appearance (atrophic scars, the type usually associated with acne).
Acne: The Sad Truth
Unfortunately, people can be afflicted by inflamed acne, unsightly dark or red blemishes, and acne scars for years. Many suffer low self-esteem and depression as a result. Most insurance companies cover some treatment for inflamed acne, but don’t cover acne scar treatment, dark spots or generalized hyperpigmentation because they’re considered “cosmetic concerns”, not medical problems. Medical scar revision, deep resurfacing and steroid therapy procedures are risky on black and ethnic skin because the results are unpredictable, often unsatisfactory, and in many cases, ca worsen the problem. It’s not surprising that acne scars and dark blemishes are a universal challenge.
