If you’re new to skincare or trying to manage your skin, I know how confusing it can be to navigate the maze of skincare products and services to find a reliable regimen for your skintype or problems.
Over the years I have talked about the different variables involved in getting, keeping and maintaining beautiful skin and often refer to it as a “three- pronged approach,” which includes lifetyle, diet and products.
The first step within the three pronged approach to achieving the flawless skin you desire and most of all deserve, is lifestyle.
Honestly, this may be the most difficult part of the journey to healthy, glowing skin, however, it can be the most vital. I say that it is difficult, because not only do we have to learn new habits, we have to do even more work to un-learn old habits, which no longer serve us.
Be Proactive
Whether you suffer from acne, dryness, aging or have near perfect skin, it is always better (and oftentimes cheaper) to be pro- active and intentional with your skincare routine. A healthy skin lifestyle, verses a reactive one (you know… always putting out fires when trying to tame a skin problem and using that old excuse “I’m going to wait and see. It’ll probably get better on its own”, will almost always cost you more money, stress and heartache). Isn’t the goal to have skin that behaves? This is an example of one of the benefits of being proactive.
Laundry Care
Although clothes that smell amazing coming out of the dryer can make you feel warm and fuzzy, the fragrance responsible for that feeling can also cause clogging and irritation. Fabric softeners are/have been a much loved and used item in the American household. Unfortunately it can be a very fickle friend. You can use it for years and never have a problem then one day you realize that you have developed an itchy rash that can leave dry patchy skin and/or discoloration in its wake. If you have acne, sleep on wonderful smelling pillows and are using products to control it and your skin is not getting any betterr…that could be from the clogging nature of fabric softeners ( whether liquid or sheets). So, if you are having issues with your skin, you may need to look no further than your laundry room.
“ I’ve used this product forever with no problem” is no excuse for not getting rid of fabric softener now that you know it could be a problem.
Watch Your Hands
Whether your hands, the hands of a loved one or a friend…hands on your face is never a good idea. Many times this practice occurs out of habit or to show affection, either way it’s not a safe practice in general. It’s especially bad for those suffering from acne. Science has taught us that our hands can rival a toilet in terms of germs. What’s the takeaway? With this in mind can you find another way to show affection?
There are many more factors to consider when it comes to specific things you incorporate into your daily life, to obtain the results in which you desire. Stay tune for additional blogs highlighting lifestyle changes for healthy, glowing skin!
