Did you know that cosmetics and skin care products are the least regulated products on the US market? That’s kind of scary to hear. Apparently the FDA decided to leave it to the cosmetics industry to mandate and regulate itself. How comforting.Did you know that cosmetics and skin care products are the least regulated products on the US market? That’s kind of scary to hear. Apparently the FDA decided to  Many of these ingredients can be mildly or extremely harmful. Some can cause mild skin irritation, while others are believed to disrupt one’s hormonal balance, or can even go as far as being linked to cancer. Terrifying! In this article we’ll take a look at how to read labels on our foundation (something we may be applying to our skin daily), which ingredients are safe, which ingredients we want to avoid, and which ingredients that may sound scary, but in fact, are not.

Let’s get started!

A list of ingredients to avoid in Foundation

Here are some key ingredients you’ll want to avoid when shopping for or applying your foundation to your skin.

  1. Parabens- many of us have heard the word ‘paraben’ in the last 10 years or so, but not all of us know what it is. What we do know is that it is an ingredient many natural cosmetics (even some cosmetics that aren’t even all that natural), have slapped across their bottles and labels to encourage more buyers.

You’ll see paraben-free on your shampoos, conditioners, face creams, body lotions and more. But what are parabens exactly and why are they potentially harmful? Parabens have been added to many of our products over the last 30 years (if not more) because it’s a cheap chemical that will extend the bottle’s shelf life and prevent mold and bacteria from growing in and on the surface of the product.

So where does the problem lie exactly?

Well, according to the FDA, parabens may be connected to an increase in breast cancer due to its estrogen-producing properties. We’d all probably unanimously agree that we’d rather buy products with shorter shelf lives than products that have any cancer-risks linked, right?

  1. Sodium Laureth Sulfate- Sodium Laureth Sulfate is commonly found in creamy foundations. This sulfate works at aiding the skin to absorb the moisture of the product more quickly and easily. Scientists speculate whether this ingredient can be linked to different types of cancer, and may also cause skin irritation, redness or breakouts.

  1. Heavy Metals- heavy metals are in a majority of our skincare products that don’t rely on natural ingredients to give you beautiful results. Heavy metals like mercury, chromium and aluminum can be harmful for one’s nervous system, reproductive and respiratory systems.

  • BHA and BHT- BHA and BHT are Butylated compounds that are frequently found in powdered foundations because it helps to preserve the foundation. However, BHA and BHT can disrupt the body’s hormonal balance. Overtime, this recurring imbalance can cause developmental and reproductive issues. Furthermore, butylated compounds can be considered carcinogenic.

    1. MEA, TEA, DEA- Ethanolamines are only found in American beauty products and have been banned in many other countries because of its potentially carcinogenic properties. Many scientists have linked ethanolamines to male reproductive issues and other forms of cancer. Again, not really an ingredient you absolutely need in your foundation.

Final Thoughts on Choosing a Natural Foundation
