Let’s face it, we all want youthful age defying skin for as long as possible. But what if the absence of one simple practice prevented us from having that?

As the mainstream complexity of skincare continues to grow, proper sun care continues to be disregarded.  In a report conducted by the The World Health Organization, researchers found that sun exposure can be attributed to up to 90% of visible changes associated with aging. Long term exposure to the sun weakens the skin's elasticity, which in return causes: premature wrinkling, sags and bags, and easy bruising.

It was during a skin conference where I learned this vital lesson in sun care for the skin. During a lecture we were shown two pictures. The first picture depicted a plump, fair-skinned, but youthful Buddhist monk. The second picture depicted a hardworking European woman in the fields. After inspecting both photos, we were then tasked with guessing the ages of those depicted. A brief observation left most of us assuming that the monk’s age ranged between 35-40, and the woman’s between 65-70.

Boy, were we wrong.

It turns out that the monk was actually 80 years old.  His lifestyle permitted him to live in an indoor mountain commune safe from sun exposure. The European “woman” turned out to be a 16 year old girl. She worked in the fields of Italy picking grapes, and unfortunately did it without the benefit of sunscreen. Both my story and the photo above of a truck driver with many miles under his belt.  The difference between both sides of his face depict the thin line between aging, and improper sun care.

Before you or anyone else look into anti-aging treatments, make sure you take the proper steps to protect your skin from the sun.  Use a sunblock with SPF 30 or above.
