Sweater Weather, Thirsty Skin: Your Winter Skincare Reset

Sweater Weather, Thirsty Skin: Your Winter Skincare Reset

You wouldn’t wear your summer clothes all winter and expect to stay comfortable, right? You pull out your sweaters, add layers, and dress for the weather. Your skincare routine may need that same seasonal attention.

Cold outdoor air and dry, heated indoor air can leave skin feeling tight, looking dull, or needing more moisture. A winter skincare routine doesn’t have to mean replacing everything on your shelf. It means noticing what your skin needs and adjusting thoughtfully.

After more than 25 years in skincare, here’s what I want you to remember: your daily habits matter just as much as the products you use. Let’s get ahead of winter dryness together.

Give your skincare a winter wardrobe check

Keep the products that are working, and adjust the steps that no longer keep your skin comfortable. Just as you add a sweater on a chilly day, you might add a hydrating layer or choose a richer moisturizer.

Your cleanser may stay the same while the care you follow it with changes. Let tightness, discomfort, and how your skin feels throughout the day guide you, not just the date on the calendar.

Layer hydration, then follow with moisturizer

If your skin starts feeling thirsty, don’t wait until it’s uncomfortable to adjust your routine. A hydrating serum can be a helpful extra layer, but it doesn’t replace moisturizer.

Apply moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp after cleansing. If your usual lotion isn’t keeping you comfortable, consider a richer cream. Hydration and moisture retention work together.

And yes, keep drinking your water. Just remember that drinking water doesn’t replace caring for your skin on the outside.

Turn down the heat, not your comfort

I know that heat feels good when you come in from the cold! But an extra-hot home, hot shower, or car vent blowing directly on your face can make winter dryness harder to manage.

  • Keep your thermostat at a comfortable, moderate setting.
  • Once the car warms up, ease back on the heat and direct vents away from your face.
  • Choose warm water instead of hot, and keep showers short.
  • If indoor air feels especially dry, consider a humidifier and keep it clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Flaky winter skin doesn’t always need exfoliation

A dull, rough-looking surface can sometimes involve accumulated dead skin cells, and appropriate, gentle exfoliation may help it look smoother. But flaking does not automatically mean you need to exfoliate.

Skin that feels tight, stings, itches, or looks red may be dry or irritated. Scrubbing or adding more exfoliating products can make that worse. Dryness and surface buildup can also happen together, so the answer isn’t always “exfoliate more.”

Start by checking your moisturizer, water temperature, and exposure to dry heat. If your skin is irritated, give exfoliation a break and focus on gentle cleansing and moisturizer. Persistent cracking, irritation, or discomfort deserves attention from a dermatologist.

Where the TRUTH BAR fits in your winter routine

The TRUTH BAR is your cleanser, the first step in your routine. I love giving you a simple place to start, but cleansing is only one part of caring for winter skin. Following with moisturizer is still essential.

Lather the TRUTH BAR in wet hands, gently cleanse damp skin, rinse thoroughly with warm water, and pat gently. No aggressive scrubbing.

Let your skin guide you. The goal is comfortable, clean skin, not a tight or “squeaky-clean” feeling. If cleansing leaves your skin tight or irritated, adjust your routine instead of pushing through it. And if your skin already feels smooth, don’t add a scrub just because you think winter flaking demands one.

A simple winter skincare routine

  1. Cleanse gently. Start with the TRUTH BAR if it agrees with your skin.
  2. Hydrate as needed. Add a hydrating serum if your skin benefits from that extra layer.
  3. Moisturize promptly. Follow with a moisturizer that keeps your skin comfortable.
  4. Protect in the morning. Finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Winter doesn’t put sun protection on pause.

Check in with your skin throughout the day. If it’s becoming tight by lunchtime, that’s useful information: your routine may need another adjustment.

As you get your winter wardrobe ready, check in with your skincare, too. Ease up on excessive heat, keep hot water off your face, and give your skin consistent moisture. A few thoughtful changes can help keep your skin comfortable as the weather changes. 💜

With love,
Ms. V
