With so much skincare advice available, it's easy to keep buying products and changing your routine without ever feeling confident that you're doing the right thing.
After more than 25 years of working with clients, I've noticed something:
Sometimes you don't need another product. You need clarity.
Here are seven signs it may be time to ask a skincare professional.
1. You Keep Buying Products Without Getting Anywhere
Your bathroom counter keeps getting fuller, but you don't feel any closer to understanding your skin.
If you're constantly replacing one product with the next trending recommendation, it may be time to stop shopping and start asking questions.
Before you buy product number eleven, let's figure out what products one through ten are doing.
2. Your Routine Came From Five Different People
Your cleanser came from TikTok.
Your serum came from your best friend.
Your exfoliant came from an influencer.
Your moisturizer came from YouTube.
And somehow they're all supposed to work together?
Who told you to use your products this way? 😂
A collection of good products doesn't automatically make a good routine.
3. You Don't Know What Your Products Actually Do
Pick up each product on your bathroom counter and ask:
“Why am I using this?”
If you can't answer that question, that's worth paying attention to.
You should understand the purpose of the products you're consistently putting on your skin.
4. You're Dealing With the Same Concerns Over and Over
Breakouts improve and return.
Dark marks seem to linger.
Your skin repeatedly feels dry, oily, irritated, rough, or unpredictable.
If you're continually responding to the same concerns by purchasing something new, it may be time to look at the bigger picture.
5. Your Routine Keeps Getting More Complicated
More isn't always better.
More products. More exfoliation. More active ingredients. More steps.
Sometimes all that “more” makes it harder to determine what's actually working.
A good routine should be something you understand and can follow consistently.
6. You're Following Advice That Wasn't Designed for Your Skin
Your friend's favorite product may be wonderful.
For your friend.
The same goes for the product an influencer loves or the routine that's trending online.
This can be especially important when caring for melanin-rich complexions, where thoughtful product and treatment choices matter.
Popular doesn't automatically mean appropriate for your skin.
7. You're Tired of Guessing
This may be the clearest sign of all.
You've watched the videos.
You've read the reviews.
You've bought the products.
And you're still wondering:
“What am I actually supposed to be doing?”
At some point, another recommendation may only add to the confusion.
Sometimes it's simply time to ask a professional.
Sound Familiar?
If you recognized your bathroom counter—or yourself—in several of these signs, it may be time for some professional guidance.
And yes, if we talk, I'm probably going to want to know what's hiding on that bathroom counter. 😂
