How the sun damages our skin all year long

Breaking the Myth: Black/Coloured Men and Women Don't Need Sunscreen
Even if your skin doesn’t seem to be burning under excess sun exposure, it sure is getting damaged - and that’s a fact. Many believe that the high levels of melanin in the skin (what makes pigment darker) acts as a shield against the sun’s harsh rays. If only that were true! Melanin is believed to provide a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of approximately 13, but it’s not enough to protect the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
The scary news is, that anyone can get skin cancer from those blazing UV rays. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, only 65 percent of African Americans survive melanoma, as opposed to the 91% rate for caucasians. Most doctors believe the reason for this disparity is because of a lack of early detection, which is mostly because of a lack of circulating information and therefore, awareness.
According to Dr. Susan Taylor, a Harvard-trained dermatologist and internist:
“...those from African-American, Asian, Latino and Native American backgrounds usually have higher morbidity and mortality rates for several types of skin cancer than their white counterparts. This lower survival rate is a direct result of late detection or misdiagnosis.”
So please, protect your skin and pay special attention to common skin cancer areas like the bottom of the foot, lower leg, palms, under the fingernails and toenails, and the genital area. It’s also important to have a dermatologist you can trust, and one who is well informed on all skin types and skin tones.
